For the Checkout Assistant Who Made Me Completely Wordless – Kudos to You

It was a day of rest, and I found myself in a foul mood, filling up my mother's vehicle. The location was a typical gas station that operates as a supermarket, which often leads of waiting behind shoppers with carts of pricey provisions. This is a dreadful thing to unfold when all you want is to get gasoline and leave. Terrible.

My position was fourth in the queue. Just one person serving, a female attendant. A peculiar quality in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had at last settled for his purchases, a baked snack, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Odd. Could be I misunderstood, or perhaps she spoke and used a mocking tone. The thought crossed my mind if she could even be an ally in the war on delays, sharing my contempt for those who delay straightforward customers like me.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The person ahead of our group completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. Again, the phrase came: “Have a wonderful day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. A stateside native? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Very rare. Rarely does one encounter people from America visiting this town, certainly not employed at gas stations or elsewhere.

I was second now. Following a senior shopper engaged in a right old battle with her basket, her purchases, her purse and her rewards card. This took an eternity. After she finished, she as well was wished an excellent day. Clearly an American. I could have confirmed it by cracking a joke at the cashier, to see if she did that response their typical stare, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” Yet no idea came of a jest to express.

Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a mimicry of sincerity, which amounts to the same thing – while she stared me right in the eye, piercingly, and bid me an awesome day. It improved my mood. Beneficial indeed.
