🔗 Share this article The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons. Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit. A Significant Investment In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters. "I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come." Network Praise The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility. "All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'" A Comforting Counterpoint Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence. Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises. “It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.” Future Seasons Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan. The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
